Second Game of Smallworld

Played a second game of Smallworld on Saturday night. This time with four players. Was good fun and will hopefully become a staple game.

Also sneeked in a game of Carcassone with five players.

Partizan 2010

Visited Newark yesterday for Partizan. As ever enjoyed the show - it just feels right.

Lots of pretty games being played.

I got to play a game of Secrets of the Third Reich, which was fun in a Scooby Doo kind of way. Mechanics were very simple, figures and terrain were nice, and the fluff made it very pulp in it's feel.

Have now added it to my projects list for the near future.

Also spotted that West Wind are now doing some very nice 15mm WW2 figures. They look better than FOW and are a comprable size. Their stand was also carrying some nice terrain pieces for Walls etc.

Other things I spotted were Frontline's pieces for VSF which would be great for Malifaux, and Old Glorys 28mm and 15mm moderns - both very good.

In terms of purchases I bought a couple of Hovels East European buildings to add to my Khador Village for Warmachine, and picked up Ambush Valley for Force on Force in Vietnam plus Flying Lead for 28mm Skirmish.

This now leaves me with plans todo big Force on Force games in 15mm, which will allow me to also do IABSM etc in 15mm, and then small FoF and Flying lead (plus Warmachine, SOTR, Malifaux) in 28mm

Birthday Gaming

Birthday yesterday, and managed to get three games of Ticket to Ride in, on the :
360, a game of Black Pirate, and also my first game of Small World.

Liked Small World. The mechanics are simple, although some of the concepts are a little daunting to start with. But after a couple of turns the rules were sorted and had some fun. Looking forward to playing it again.

Also got my copy of Horus Heresy, and am aiming to get it set up over the Bank Holiday Weekend.

WTID - WTF!

Played my first game of Where there is Discord, yesterday and today. It's a boardgame about the Falklands War.

I found out about it from the Dice Tower, where it was praised for it's level of tension, involvement and theme. And by God does it deliver on all of these.

Totally enjoyed it, even though It made me stressed to the point that rolling a dice was nerve wracking.

The British Task Force succeeded in starting the landings at San Carlos, but took too many casualties that the domestic opinion rating fell through the floor, meaning a collapse of the Thatcher government and a British withdrawl in total humiliation.

That would be a lose then.

The game is a solo game, and now I know the rules should play in about 3 hours.

Can't wait to play it again. It's the equal of Twilight Struggle.

Command and Colors Ancients with Chris

Played 5 games of C&CA with Chris yesterday. Just the first scenario, and all went as victories to the Carthaginians.

Games played fast and were all enjoyable. Three of them were very close.

Chris was impressed. I learnt not to fear the Roman heavy infantry - they can be taken down piecemeal. And I used my light cavalry to block retreats forcing units to crumble.

All in all a great afternoon of gaming.

Also picked up Where there is Discord but am holding off looking at it as want to concentrate on interview prep.

Put the painting away for a while

Having just finished some GHQ moderns, a Malifaux crew, some Tau, and a Cygnar Defender, I've now put the paints and models away for a while.

Decided to play a few board games instead so need the space.

Played a game of Twilight Struggle (solo), which was SO much fun. Need to play again and blog the events as the theme in the game is very rich. Example Soviets were leading the space race but kept failing to do a lunar orbit, which allowed the USA to catch up and pass them.

Game went the full term and ended with a US victory of 14pts. Key to it had been their total control of the mid east which not only gave them points but added a shed load more for the number of battleground states in the region.

Will definatly return to TS soon. But table now given over to Commands and Colors Ancients. Learning the rules so have played the first scenario a couple of times, and have to say having a blast. Simple game but with some subtle elements which give the game colour and a real depth of strategy.

Aim to play C&CA a few more times to get the rules down pat, and them Ill play it with Chris.

Finally have also ordered a couple of new games, thanks to the Dice Tower and the D6 Generation podcasts. Have ordered "Where there is discord" and "Horus Heresy". Should have them both by the end of the month.

Warmachine

Warmachine has been the project I've worked on the most this year so far. Played a game early in the year with just the Khador and Cygnar starter boxes and then added in some units.

Have now played about five games, and enjoyed them all.

Khador tend to win but am learning more about using Cygnar.

Twilight Struggle. Wow!!!

Played another game of TS on Friday night. What a fantastic game. Tense, full of theme, and simple mechanics.

I played the US and constantly felt underpressure as I had too much todo and not enough resources todo it with.

But by the early 60's I managed to steel the win by playing the Europe scoring card after taking control of Poland.

Brilliant, brilliant game.

Campaign 2010

Went to Campaign at MK yesterday. Been the last three years and thought it a waste of time, but with my expanded love of games (boardgames and warmachine, for example), I really enjoyed it.

Had a game of Malifaux, bought Ghost Stories and the final core units for my Cygnar forces (a Journeyman and a Defender).

Enjoyed the malifaux game, and that needs to get to the table soon, so will press on with painting the crews i have and learning the rules. Will also aim to pick up some buildings at Partizan.

Just to emphasise how much I thought of the show this time - i'd have spent a lot more if I was in work, and I'd be going back on Sunday.
